Somewhere, a bird’s wings flap,
slicing through the air with an absolute purpose.
Somewhere, a snow flake lands on a mountain
as gently as a mother’s touch.
Somewhere, fireworks whizz and whirr high in the sky
as children squeal with glee,
and merry-go-rounds sing tunes, glowing with their multi-coloured lights-
and candy floss is spun for the young sugar addicts.
Somewhere, the trading floors are alive with screaming lunatics
pursuing the green dollar bill that rules their lives
as their glass buildings tower over the city.
Somewhere, all is normal
Somewhere, a helicopter’s rotors clumsily spin,
slapping through the air with a deadly purpose.
Somewhere, a parachute bomb tears through the ground
with a blind, untameable rage.
Somewhere, bullets whizz and whirr among the ash covered buildings
as children scream in terror,
and the school collapses
and the hospital burns
and barrel bombs scream their war cry,
as career politicians sit in their air conditioned offices
watching the death through a TV screen
as if it were just some glorified war film.
Somewhere, city squares are filled with starving men and women
pursuing a UN truck full of the food that could allow their children to live.
But still, back in our society everything is ok.
So, if you think that the biggest issue for humanity right now
is that you can’t get a signal for the match on Sky Sports,
then I urge you to open your eyes
and realise ….that just because you’re stuck in traffic, late for work, or angry because your ultra-fast broadband at home isn’t working…
or you got a hundred likes on your Instagram and Facebook posts
and there’s a new update on Snapchat,
not everything in the world is fine.
